Inspiration: This variety of scabious flowers from my garden is known as ‘pincushion’. I had the idea of painting some beside an actual pincushion, and I thought the colours on this one – made by my mother, who does a lot of quilting – toned in with the flowers. I didn’t put a lot of detail into the flowers, because I thought that was the best way to portray the texture of them.
